Arteries carry oxygenated blood away from the heart to the body. Veins return deoxygenated blood from the body to the heart. However, as it is no doubt obvious, it is far easier to move downward than upward. Valves within the veins maintain the upward flow of blood. It is the downward force of gravity (exacerbated by many others factors) when you are upright and the pumping action of the calf muscle which causes pressure to be exerted on the valves and veins, which have to act against gravity.
