Pharmacology
Even though there are few clinical studies to support Dandelion's medicinal use, it enjoys a long and established history in botanical medicine.3 The root appears to both stimulate production of bile as well as stimulate contraction of the gallbladder, thereby increasing bile flow. The exact mechanism by which it does this is at present unknown.2,4 While the leaf does have an action on the liver, it is primarily used for its diuretic action.5 Since it is high in potassium, it does so without depleting potassium levels.1 Recently, interest has been shown towards inulin and its action as an immunostimulating agent.4

Indications
It should be remembered that the leaves and roots have different primary actions. Dandelion root mainly is used for its hepatic and bitter properties in cases of hepatobiliary disorders, dyspepsia and decreased appetite. Due to these properties, Dandelion root tea or tincture is often used as part of a 'cleansing' or 'detoxification' process The leaves are used for their diuretic properties in cases of water retention and edema 2,4

Dandelion's high nutritional content should not be overlooked. For example, Dandelion is a richer source of Vitamin A than carrots, 14000 IU / 100 g compared to 11OOO IU / 100 g.6 Roasted Dandelion roots are also a primary ingredient in many available coffee substitutes, since the product is caffeine free.7 Due to its influence on the liver and kidneys, it has enjoyed a reputation for decreasing the incidence of stone formation.1

Toxicology and Contraindications
Dandelion root seems to be free of adverse effects, except that it may cause slight diarrhea. There have been cases of allergic dermatitis with repeated contact with the raw herb.3 Dandelion should be considered contraindicated in cases of occlusion of the bile ducts and/or gall bladder, empyema and paralytic ileus.2

Drug Interactions
No specific drug interactions with this herb could be found.

Administration
Both Dandelion root and leaf are commonly taken in tea form. Dandelion root is also commonly available as capsules and as a hydroalcoholic tincture in addition to being the principle ingredient in numerous brands of coffee substitutes. The practice of 'juicing' Dandelion root is also becoming popular.

Dosage:
Leaf: 4 to 10 g of dried leaf in the form of an infusion, three times daily.5
Root: 3 to 5 g of dried root in the form of an infusion or decoction, three times daily.3
5 to 10 ml of tincture (1:5, 25% ethanol), three times daily.3
