Kava Kava - Nature's Gift of Tranquillity

Kava is a member of the pepper family and is known botanically as, Piper methylsticum. The kava root stock is the part of the plant that provides the characteristic herbal benefit of calming, meaning the reduction or elimination of anxiety. Kava is native to the islands of the South Pacific and was first described for English readers in 1768 by Captain James Cook in the accounts concerning his voyage to the South Seas. The kava root has been used for centuries as a central feature of ceremonies and celebrations because it was able to bring about a calming and pleasant social atmosphere. The root was crushed and processed into coconut milk to become the focal ceremonial beverage, simply referred to as kava. To this day, the kava prepared beverage is still a feature of the South Pacific cultures, where, as noted by Dr. Michael T. Murray in his book, The Healing Power of Herbs, the people of these islands are often referred to as the happiest and friendliest in the world.

WHAT MAKES KAVA ROOT AN ANTI-ANXIETY HERB?
The kava rootstock contains kavalactones, a class of chemicals unique to the kava root. The general consensus is that the kavalactones account for the anti-anxiety and other beneficial effects of kava, but other root chemicals, or cofactors, are known to increase the absorption and actions of the kavalactones. Thus, a standardized kava preparation is expected to perform better than the purified kavalactones alone. However, a standardized product with too great a percent of kavalactone by weight, would necessarily reduce the amount of these co-factors. The traditional standardization of 70% may actually deliver less effect than a lower percent. Kavalactones have also been recently tested for possible benefits of male impotence and also on women for various sexual benefits and more focused on a possible breast enhancement ingredient when combined woth certain other herbs and ingredients.

WHAT IS THE SCIENTIFIC STATUS OF KAVA?
Early German research in the 1950's and 1960's on kavalactones demonstrated that they produce sedative, analgesic, anticonvulsant and muscle relaxant effects. In more recent years, these effects have received greater investigation. Kava appears to primarily impact on the limbic system of the brain which is understood to be the seat of the emotions and self -survival behaviour. A range of emotions from rage to fright are mediated via the limbic system and the modulating effects of other brain structures. The kavalactones exert their effects in non-traditional pharmacological mechanisms that are not well understood. Furthermore, unlike many anti-anxiety drugs, the kavalactones do not lose their effect over time.

WHAT IS THE CLINICAL STATUS OF KAVA?
Kava is used in several European countries for nervous anxiety, insomnia, and restlessness. This acceptable clinical status has evolved out of favourable placebo-controlled and double-blind clinical research. In one study with 84 patients with anxiety symptoms, there were improvements in vigilance, memory, and reaction time. In an other study comparing kava preparation with the benzodiazepine class of drug, the class to which Valium, Halcion and Tranxene belong, both treatments produced progressive improvements in anxiety control. However, while benzodiazepines are associated with addiction and adverse side effects, kava is known to be free of addiction and adverse side effects are rare and associated with misuse. In another study kava extract produced statistically significant reduction in the symptoms of anxiety, including feelings of nervousness, and somatic (bodily) complaints such as heart palpitations, chest pains, headache, dizziness, and feelings of gastric irritation. No side effects were reported with the kava extract. Kava extract is not associated with depressed mental function the way alcohol is and does not impair driving or the operation of equipment.

WHAT ARE THE USAGE RECOMMENDATIONS?
Dosage recommendations based on past research suggest that 45 to 70 milligrams of the kavalactones, 3 times per day, in the extract form, are able to reduce or eliminate anxiety. For a sedative effect, an amount providing 180 to 210 milligrams of kavalactones can be taken one hour before bed. The traditional South Seas kava ceremonial drink would contain approximately 250 mg of kavalactones per bowl, and several bowls would be consumed at one sitting, often producing a compelling sleep. Multiply the standardization percent times the capsule weight, to obtain the milligrams of kavalactones per capsule. For example, an 150mg capsule standardized at 30% kavalactones, will deliver 45mg of kavalactones.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS AND CAUTIONS?
Although side effects are rarely associated with kava extract, side effects might be manifested with prolonged use of quantities that greatly exceed the recommended daily dose. High doses of the kava ceremonial drink consumed daily for a few months to a year or more have given rise to kava dermopathy, a skin condition characterized by dry scaly eruptions, especially in the palms, soles of the feet, forearms and back. The best policy is to adhere to the manufacturers recommendation on the packaging. Those taking medications for anxiety, depression, or psychiatric conditions, should receive the guidance of their physician before using kava. Some experience a greater alertness in the first phase of kava's effect, thus finding that sleep is harder to enter into. Kava should be taken at least one hour before bedtime, or longer in some cases, to minimize the risk of bedtime alertness.
