What should people keep in mind when choosing a plastic surgeon?
There are a variety of things. First of all, you should select somebody who is appropriately trained: a board-certified plastic surgeon, not someone certified in some other area of medicine. Sadly, we have charlatans who describe themselves as being certified in cosmetic surgery. In fact, there is no such board as the American Cosmetic Board recognized by the AMA (American Medical Association) or Board of Medical Specialties. So step one is to inquire of your general physician, or family physician, for one or several recommendations.
The second is to determine if those recommended are board-certified plastic surgeons. If your doctor can't provide you with those names, log on to the web site of the American Board of Plastic Surgeons. Find several in your area, check their backgrounds, ask around about them, see if they have web sites that can give you greater insight, make appointments and meet individually with those physicians, and talk about the procedures that interest you. Then comes the hardest part. Don't make the decision based on price. You are not looking for the cheapest individual to take good care of your life and body. Make a decision based on the doctor with whom you felt most comfortable, the person whom you had the gut feeling that he/she would take good care of you, and who was able to represent to you that they have the experience to do the job that you need to have done. That may include actually speaking with some of the doctor's patients. Not necessarily to have the doctor's receptionist or wife come in and get naked to use as an example, but to have someone in the community like yourself that you can call.
You should also determine where the doctor does the surgery. Is it a hospital setting or a certified ambulatory setting, or just the doctor's office, which would make me wary. And does the doctor have privileges at one or several of the well-respected hospitals in your area? Do these privileges include the privileges to perform these surgeries in those hospitals as well? To help simplify this, you might contact the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and ask them to send you a booklet called "How to Choose a Plastic Surgeon."
