Saw Palmetto And Bust Enlargement!

Saw Palmetto - A Herb For The Body
Saw Palmetto has was first introduced many years ago and as of late has been an exciting topic for many reasons. The newest studies conducted with Saw Palmetto have shown to repair mammory cells in women and also as a possible treatment for prostate problems in men. Almost all men over 50 will experience some prostate problems.

WHAT IS SAW PALMETTO?
Saw palmetto, also called Serenoa repens, or Sabal serrulata, is an evergreen shrub that grows along the Atlantic coast of the United States from the Carolinas to Florida. The dried berries from the Saw palmetto plant are the part used as herbal remedy. HOW DOES IT HELP AN ENLARGED PROSTATE?
Saw palmetto berries contain compounds that naturally support hormone metabolism, but it is the berries' fat-soluble extract that seems most helpful for symptoms of an enlarged prostate. The extract has demonstrated impressive results in the treatment of an enlarged prostate and has reduced many of the uncomfortable symptoms. HOW DOES IT WORK?
A potent hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) may be the culprit that causes the prostate to enlarge, since high levels of DHT are found in men who have prostate enlargement. The research suggests that Saw palmetto extract can inhibit the action of a key enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT. It also may prevent DHT from binding to receptor sites in prostate tissue, and it can block estrogen's effect on the prostate. Estrogen is produced at low levels in men. DOES THE SCIENCE SUPPORT THE CLAIMS?
Many studies show that Saw palmetto extract can alleviate many of the symptoms, such as increased urinary frequency, nighttime urination and reduced urine flow and volume. In one study 1,334 men with enlarged prostate were given an extract of Saw palmetto for 12 weeks. The extract improved nighttime urination and decreased residual urine. The percentage of patients with painful urination decreased from 75% to 37%. The effectiveness of the herb was considered to be good to excellent in more than 80% of the cases, and good to excellent tolerability was reported by more than 95% of users. Another study with 305 patients demonstrated positive results with Saw palmetto extract. Men with mild to moderate symptoms of enlarged prostate were given an oral dose of 160 mg of Saw palmetto extract, two times daily for three months. After only 45 days, improvement was noted in urinary flow rates, residual urinary volume and prostate size. After three months 88% of the patients and the treating physicians considered the Saw palmetto extract effective in treating the urination problems caused by prostate enlargement, with a low incidence of side effects. IS IT SAFE?
Numerous scientific studies prove Saw palmetto to be safe and effective. The extract is well tolerated and causes no feminizing effects, often associated with standard steroid prostate treatments. On rare occasions, some have reported mild gastrointestinal disturbances. HOW MUCH SHOULD I TAKE?
Clinical evaluations of Saw palmetto have shown that 320mg once a day or in divided doses is effective. Doses less than 320mg may not provide sufficient effect. It is important to be properly diagnosed by your physician to rule out prostate cancer. If treatment for benign prostate hyperplasia or enlarged prostate is truly called for, let your physician know that you would like to first try Saw palmetto. You should be followed by your physician in order to monitor your results. No significant side effects have been noted in clinical studies with Saw palmetto. Saw palmetto is usually more effective than standard drug therapy, which also has a greater risk for troublesome side effects. A product that provides the most benefit should contain an extract from Saw Palmetto berries standardized to 85-95% fatty acids and lipid steroids. Zinc supplementation is usually an important co-treatment with Saw Palmetto. A depleted zinc level in the prostate gland is thought to be an initiating factor for enlargement. The recommended daily quantity is 25 to 30mg. Zinc citrate or zinc gluconate is the preferred form of zinc to use. Adequate daily intake of zinc may eventually reduce or end the need for Saw Palmetto.
