Wild Yam And Breast Enhancing!

Wild Yam:

Latin binomial: Dioscorea villosa
Synonyms: Colic Root, Rheumatism Root
Parts Used: Dried root and rhizome

Constituents: Steroidal saponins based on diosgenin.1
Medical action: Anti-spasmodic, anti-inflammatory, anti-rheumatic, hepatic, cholagogue, diaphoretic.1

Pharmacology:

Within the herbal tradition, Wild Yam is primarily used for its spasmoltyic properties. It appears to decrease spasm especially in the large intestine and uterus. It is thought that the anti-inflammatory action observed could be due to an affinity for steroid receptors shown by the steroidal saponins present in the plant.1-3 While the plant itself is devoid of estrogen and progesterone, it was until recently used as the principle raw material in the manufacture of oral contraceptives.4 Its use in the manufacture of 'natural progesterones' has recently become popular again, especially as a cream for topical administration. While there are limited clinical trials, growing anecdotal evidence suggests that its use could be beneficial in allaying the more unpleasant consequences of menopause, especially prevention of osteoporosis (see Administration).5,6 Other members of the family, Dioscoreaceae, containing similar steroidal saponins have been shown `in vitro' to decrease serum cholesterol and lipids as well as to exert limited antifungal and anticoagulant action.7-8

Indications:

Wild Yam appears useful in the treatment of: Dysmennorhoea, ovarian neuralgia and muscle cramps occurring after delivery. Intestinal colic and diverticulitis. Inflammation of joints such as in arthritis.

Products manufactured from Wild Yam may prove effective in decreasing the unpleasant consequences of menopause, especially flushing and osteoporosis.1,6

Toxicology and Contraindications:

Wild Yam appears to be free of any major adverse effects.

Drug Interactions:

No pharmaceutical interactions with Wild Yam could be found.

Administration:

Wild Yam is commonly available in most standard oral dosage forms, including capsule, tincture and fluid extract. Regarding the 'natural progesterone' creams, it should be remembered that these products are not simply Wild Yam mixed in an aqueous base, but do in fact contain products manufactured from Wild Yam.

Dosage::
5 to 10g as a decoction, taken orally three times daily.1
2 to 4ml of tincture three times daily.1
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoonful applied to the skin (face, neck, back of wrists, hands, chest or abdomen rotated day-to-day) twice daily or as advised by an appropriate healthcare provider.9

For oral administration, Wild Yam is commonly combined with carminative herbs for the treatment of intestinal colic, such as Acorus calamus (Sweet Flag), Matricaria chamomilla (Chamomile) and Zingiber officinalis (Ginger).
