I get yeast infections frequently. I've tried everything, and nothing helps. Do you have any remedy for this?
Dec. 3, 2001 -- Several effective treatments are available for recurrent yeast infections. Accurately identifying the type of yeast that you have is often the key to success.
Symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection are usually caused by Candida albicans. But up to a third of recurrent infections are linked to less common types of yeast such as Candida glabrata, C. parapsilosis, or C. tropicalis. The reason this is important is that some of these species are resistant to standard antifungal drugs and may require alternate medications.
So the first step in treating a recurrent infection is to verify the exact cause. To do this, your doctor can take a sample of vaginal discharge and check it using several simple tests that are available in most medical offices. A test that takes much longer to perform, but gives more accurate results, called a fungal culture can be done on the same sample to identify the specific yeast causing your infection.
If Candida albicans is confirmed as the cause of yeast infections that are recurrent -- more than three times a year -- one effective remedy is to take an oral antifungal medication. The author of an article in the Feb. 15, 2001, issue of American Family Physician recommends the following prescription regimen: Take fluconazole (Diflucan), itraconazole (Sporanox), or ketoconazole orally for two weeks to clear up the infection. Then take small daily or weekly doses of the same medication for the next six months to keep the infection from coming back. The article reports that while on this therapy at least 90% of women do not have a recurrence.
Many other choices abound. So if your infection does not respond to treatment, ask your doctor about your options. Various prescription or over-the-counter antifungal creams, tablets, or suppositories can be given weekly or monthly to prevent yeast infections. And boric acid is sometimes used vaginally during menstruation. If a rare form of yeast is the culprit, several alternate medications are available that may help clear up the infection.
